With the Paris fashion shows in full swing - and this year's emphasis still very much on elegance rather than gimmicks - Pierre Cardin unveiled his autumn and winter collection on Wednesday and produced a refreshingly youthful line.

SYNOPSIS: Monsieur Cardin introduced his models personally - and here one of them shows that he describes as a "devilish little number" - an outfit with the young - or young at heart - very much in mind. Trousers have been trimmed to the absolute minimum and are worm with gaiters.

Pierre Cardin calls this a "flower girl" ensemble and again it would hardly be likely to appeal to the older generation. It does, however, have the advantage of being very easy to wear and it is both light, supple and adaptable.

Evening dresses now - and following the general trend in Paris this year for greater emphasis on formal clothes, Pierre Cardin created this subtle combination of two contrasting fabrics which are designed to give each other depth and warmth. The skirt is in a very light flowered Indian silk organza and the top is draped into a shawl effect and made from soft wool jersey.

And in contrast again - an outfit that will gladden the heart's of femme fatales the world over - yards and yards of very soft black crepe. Draped from head to toe, this creation appears to cling all over - but in fact it is cunningly made for ease of movement and subtle changes of emphasis.
