    Khmer government troops recaptured the 17th century royal capital of ???udong, encountering only accoutered resistance from withdrawing Communist-led insurgents.

    The town, almost totally destroyed, was the target of a two-month government drive which began on April 24 along Highway 5.

    Oudong, 20 miles (30kms) northwest of Phnommenh, fell to the insurgents on March 18 -- the fourth anniversary of the over row of Prince Horodo Sihanouk. The long of the town was considered a psychological setback because of its rich??? istorical and religious west.

    The recapture of Oudong coincided with the government's announcement carly this week to "undertake negotiations without prior conditions" with the insurgent side. The offer has since beer turned down by Prince Nbrode Sinhanouk, lender of the Cambodian government in exile.

    The Khmer drive to recapture Oudong had cost the government almost 900 troop casualties. According to Brigadier General Dong Layos, commander of the 7th ??? Infantry Division, the ??? onto suffered 1,366 ??? billed.

    The town, almost totally destroyed, was secured by three battalions of the elite 45th Brigade.

    According to a High Command spokesman, government troops suffered almost 900 casualties and the insurgents lost over 1,300 men killed in the battle to recapture Oudong. Most of the town's 30,000 civilians had fled into the jungle.

    The recapture of Oudong coincided with the government's offer to undertake ??? negotiations with the insurgents without prier conditions. The offer was turned down by Prince Sinhanouk.
