  • Description

Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and her husband Prince Bernherdt are now (until 26 February) in Liberia following a three-day visit to the Ivory Coast.

The Royal couple were guests of Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny. During their stay they toured areas under new industrial development, universities and schools and attended receptions given both by the government and Dutch residents in the capital, Abid jan.

More than two hundred thousand people turned out for the Royal couple's arrival in Abidjan on Monday (19 February). They were repaying a visit by the Ivory Coast President and his wife to the Netherlands in June 1970. In his welcome to the Royal couple, the president stressed the cooperation that exists between Holland and the Ivory Coast as well as the two countries' similar attitudes on political questions. He also expressed his country's gratitude for Dutch assistance in developing both industry and social facilities in the Ivory Coast.

Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhardt spent a day in Yamoussokro where the Ivory Coast President was born. There they toured his plantations and several new factories which have been established in the area. The Queen paid tribute to the great changes in the country.

Prior to their visit to the Ivory Coast the Royal couple stayed for a day in Senegal. They are now visiting the Liberian capital, Monrovia.
