  • Description

The thirteen-year-old son of an official of the Academy of Arts at Memphis, Tennessee, was kidnapped briefly Thursday and later released by an unidentified person who objected to four pictures of nudes in an academy show and demanded that they be removed.

The kidnapped boy was Richard Batey, son of Dr. Richard Batey of the Memphis Academy. Dr. Batey went on television to say that the kidnapper's demand had been met.

Because of the controversy over the pictures of the nude women, the Mayor of Memphis, Henry Loeb, had named a four-member commission to look into the Academy art show. The commission had recommended that the nudes be allowed to remain on the exhibition walls.

Then the kidnapper went into action and the pictures came off, just like the clothes of the women who had posed for them.
