    THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE MINISTER, MR. MALCOLM FRASER, LEFT SAIGON FOR THE BATTLEFIELD YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). HE MADE A TOUR OF THE AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE POSITIONS IN PHUOC TUY PROVINCE EAST OF SAIGON.

    MR. FRASER WAS ON A FOUR-DAY VISIT TO SOUTH VIETNAM, MAINLY TO INSPECT THE PROGRESS OF THE SO-CALLED VIETNAMESATION OF THE WAR AND ALSO TO DISCUSS A POSSIBLE REDUCTION IN THE AUSTRALIAN COMMITMENT.

    MR. FRASER VISITED THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY HOSPITAL AND SPOKE TO WOUNDED TROOPS. HE GAVE THEM WORDS OF COMFORT AND THANKED THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE TO THE COUNTRY.

    HE THEN TOOK A HELICOPTER TO FIRE SUPPORT BASE ANNE. HE SPOKE TO THE TROOPS, INSPECTED THE ARTILLERY AND WAS SHOWN CAPTURED VIETCONG EQUIPMENT, INCLUDING THE DEADLY AK-47 MACHINE -GUN WHICH HE TOYED WITH.

    IT WAS MR. FRASER'S THIRD VISIT TO SOUTH VIETNAM, HIS TWO PREVIOUS VISITS BEING WHILE ARMY MINISTER. HE ALSO SAW SOMETHING OF THE PEACEFUL SIDE: CIVIC ACTION PROJECTS BY AUSTRALIAN TROOPS RANGING FROM CLEARING LAND TO BUILDING WINDMILLS.

    HIS FINAL VISIT WAS TO A PLACE OF ESCAPE FOR THE AUSTRALIAN TROOPS - THE REST AND RECREATION CENTRE AT VUNG TAU ON THE COST. MR. FRASER WAS DUE TO LEAVE SAIGON TODAY FOR WASHINGTON FOR TALKS ON THE F-111.
