  • Description

The United Nations Secretary General Doctor Kurt Waldheim had meetings on Friday (11 January) with the Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Takeo Miki, and the Kenyan Foreign Minister, Dr. Njoroge Mungai. Both meetings took place in New York, at the United Nations building.

Mr. Miki is on a mission to discuss, among other things, the world energy crisis. On Thursday (10 January) he had met the United States Secretary of Stats, Doctor Henry Kissinger, and the Minister dealing with the energy situation, Mr. William Simon.

Japan is one of the countries invited by President Nixon to attend a conference of oil consuming countries next month. Mr. Miki said his country would attend the conference with the understanding that its ultimate purpose was to bring together the consumer and producer countries ?? spirit of co-operation. The two groups, he said, had a "basic community of interests".

Speaking after his meeting with the U.N. Secretary general, he said co-operation would undoubtedly be int he interests of humanity because 'co-existence and co-prosperity' were the order of the day. The energy crisis should not be resolved through confrontation.

The Kenyan Minister, Mr. Mungai, had asked for his meeting with Doctor Waldheim. It's reported he was letting the Secretary General know that troops from Kenya were available if required to serve in the Middle East Peace-keeping force.
