MALAYA PRODUCES ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF ALL TIN MINED IN THE WORLD. THIS YEAR THE INDUSTRY?

  • Description

MALAYA PRODUCES ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF ALL TIN MINED IN THE WORLD. THIS YEAR THE INDUSTRY HAS BOOMED - DUE TO CONSISTENTLY HIGH PRICES ON WORLD MARKETS, AND AN EVER INCREASING DEMAND FOR THE PRODUCT. THE METHODS USED IN EXTRACTING THE VALUABLE ORE VARY FROM HAND-HELD PANS IN A RUNNING STREAM, TO HUGE WATER DREDGES - MANY OF THEM LARGER THAN OCEAN-GOING STEAMERS.

THE KINTA VALLEY IS ONE OF THE CHIEF TIN MINING AREAS OF MALAYA. IT LIES CLOSE TO IPOH - A CITY OFTEN CONSIDERED THE TIN MINING CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. IN THE CONFINED SPACE OF THE VALLEY MANY DIFFERENT METHODS OF EXTRACTING TIN CAN BE SEEN.

ONE OF THE OLDEST METHODS IS THAT USED BY GOLD MINERS IN THEIR SEARCH FOR WEALTH - PANNING. MANY FAMILIES SPEND LONG HOURS ANKLE DEEP IN RUNNING WATER ALONG THE KINTA VALLEY PANNING FOR TIN. SOME OF THOSE WORKING IN THESE SMALL FAMILY OPERATIONS ARE WOMEN - THEY MAKE UP A SIZABLE PERCENTAGE OF THE INDUSTRY'S WORK FORCE.

A COMMON FORM OF EXTRACTION IS THROUGH THE USE OF VERY HIGH-POWERED HOSES. THE WATER IS OFTEN PUMPED MANY MILES TO THE SITE - BUT IN THE TIN INDUSTRY WHERE PROFITS ARE HIGH, MONEY IS LITTLE OBJECT. THE HIGH SPEED JETS OF WATER BREAK DOWN THE TIN-BEARING GRAVEL. THE GRAVEL IS THEN LIFTED, EITHER BY GRAVEL PUMPS OR HYDRAULIC ELEVATORS, TO SLUICE BOXES WHERE THE ORE IS RECOVERED.

DREDGES USED IN THE VALLEY ARE GARGANTUAN MACHINES - MANY OF THEM LARGER THAN OCEAN-GOING STEAMERS. THEY FLOAT ON PONDS OF THEIR OWN MAKING. TWO-TON BUCKETS - REVOLVING ON AN ENDLESS CHAIN-BRING THE TIN-BEARING SILT FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE POND. THE DREDGES MOVE SLOWLY BACK AND FORTH ACROSS THE COUNTRYSIDE FILLING IN OLD PONDS WITH THE GRAVEL AND EARTH SEPARATED FROM THE TIN ORE.

THERE'S A SIDELINE TO THE WORKING OF DREDGES WHICH IS ALSO PROVING BENEFICIAL TO THE MALAYSIAN ECONOMY. AS THE DREDGES SHUTTLE BACK AND FORTH THEY ARE CONSTANTLY DRAINING SWAMPLANDS AND SO RECLAIMING LAND WHICH UP TILL NOW HAS BEEN WORTHLESS....
