  • Description

The right-wing Falangist Party was among the hundreds of groups around the world who marked May Day with a rally. Many leaders of the several rightist parties in Lebanon were there.

SYNOPSIS: Leaders of the Lebanese Front alliance were joined in the rally by the radical 'Guardians of the Cedar' organisation. The main speaker was the Falangist deputy Amin gemayel, the Falangist official in charge of the Metn district.

Amin Gemayel's district includes the Tel Zaatar Palestinian camp which was over-run by the Rightists in 1976. His views on the Palestinian question are therefore considered to be authoritative Rightist views. He said the Palestinians have taken a lot from Lebanon, and there have bene many problems. He also criticised the Egypt-Israeli peace moves He said this had caused trouble for Lebanon. But observers said his speech indicated a software attitude towards a national dialogue within Lebanon, and an inclination towards greater cooperation with Syria on the basis, in his words, of 'mutual' respect'.

May Day near Beirut was also a time for patriotic music. The Lebanese Front was recently in danger of splitting following reports of a bomb attack by one right-wing party on another in northern Lebanon. But for May Day the leaders showed unity within the Front. They included Camille chamoun and Pierre Gemayel, who both held high posts in former Lebanese governments, and walked together from the rally.
