  • Description

A British banker, just released after more than two years' detention in China, crossed into Hongkong today (Friday). Mr. David Cecil Johnston, the 56-year-old former manager of the Chartered Bank branch in Shanghai, was arrested in August 1968 accused of being "an enemy of the People's Republic."
"It's marvellous to be back at Christmas" were his first few words to his wife, Elithabeth who rushed up to kiss him on the Hongkong end of the Lowu rail bridge, which forms a boundary between the colony and China.

Mrs. Johnston, who had flown from England last night for the occasion, was too overcome with emotion to reply.

The banker, wearing a dark overcoat and carrying a bundle in his hands, walked briskly with head held high past the last Chinese check point into British territory.

He looked happy and in good health, despite earlier reports that he was suffering from kidney trouble.
