    THE CEYLON GOVERNMENT'S PLAN TO NATIONALISE THE ISLAND'S LARGEST NEWSPAPER GROUP WAS THE SUBJECT OF A DEMONSTRATION IN COLOMBO ON THURSDAY. PARLIAMENTARY OPPOSITION LEADERS AND SUPPORTERS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS TO A RALLY AT THE TOWN HALL.

    TRUCK-LOADS OF ARMED POLICE STOOD BY AS THE PROCESSION MADE ITS WAY TO THE TOWN HALL. RALLY WAS PRESIDED OVER BY MR. SENANYAKE. THE ROSTRUM WAS FLANKED WITH BLACK FLAGS AS A SIGN OF MOURNING FOR PRESS FREEDOM. SEVERAL BUDDHIST MONKS WERE AMONG THE SPEAKERS.

    (THE CEYLONESE PARLIAMENT AT PRESENT IS DEBATING A BILL, WHICH WOULD NATIONALISE ASSOCIATED NEWSPAPERS OF CEYLON. COUNTER-DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE BEEN TAKING PLACE BY PRO-COMMUNISTS IN SUPPORT OF THE BILL. THESE DEMONSTRATION HAVE BEEN ATTENDED BY OTHER BUDDHIST MONKS WELCOMING THE PROPOSED TAKE-OVER).

    AT THE FILMED DEMONSTRATION, SPEAKERS WARNED THAT CEYLON WAS MOVING TOWARDS DICTATORSHIP AND FASCISM AS A RESULT OF PRO-COMMUNIST ENTERING THE COALITION GOVERNMENT'S CABINET. THEY ALSO CLAIMED THAT THE BILL WOULD MEAN THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN CEYLON.
