The 25th anniversary of Laotian independence was celebrated recently by members of the Pathet Lao group at their headquarters in Sam Neua, in Eastern Laos. The rally, which was attended by two thousand people, was addressed by the Chairman of the Pathet Lao Central Committee, Prince Souphanouvong.
The rally was held in the Sam Neua cave where the majority of the Pathet Lao's equipment and facilities are stored. These include a radio station, printing office, textile factory, school, and monition stores. The cave headquarters was set up as a form of protection against United States bombing raids.
In his address, Prince Souphanouvong criticised President Nixon's latest Indo-China peace initiative, claiming it was a trick to prolong the war in Laos. The Prince also called on the people of Laos to strengthen their ties with the people of Vietnam and Cambodia as one in Indo-China. The three nations, he said, should join as one in their fight against the United States and its "puppet countries".
