THE HINDU LEADER IS ON A FAST TO PROTEST THE PLANS, AND THE SIKH RELIGIOUS LEADER HAS LOCKED HIMSELF AWAY IN THE GOLDEN TEMPLE IN AMRITSAR, THE SIKH'S MOST HOLY SHRINE.

    MR YAGYA DATT SHARMA, LEADER OF THE HINDU JAN SANGH PARTY, HAS REACHED THE ELEVENTH DAY OF HIS FAST, WHICH HE SAYS HE WILL CONTINUE UNTIL HE DIES UNLESS THE GOVERNMENT DROPS ITS PLANS TO DIVIDE THE PUNJAB. HE LIES UNDER A CANOPY, SURROUNDED BY CROWDS O FOLLOWERS ON ONE-DAY PROTEST FASTS.

    THE SIKH LEADER, SANT FATEH SINGH, HAS WELCOMED THE PLANS FOR PARTITION. BUT HE HAS LOCKED HIMSELF INTO THE GOLDEN TEMPLE IN AN EFFORT TO PERSUADE THE HINDU'S TO DROP THEIR OPPOSITION.

    OUTSIDE IN THE ANCIENT WALLED CITY, HUGE HINDU CROWDS WALKED IN PROCESSION IN DEFIANCE OF EMERGENCY REGULATIONS. BUT POLICE IGNORED THEM, AND THERE WAS REPEAT OF THE BLOODY RIOTING THAT HAD CONTINUED FOR MORE THAN A WEEK.
