Background: Reports from the Sinai desert, where the Israelis and Egyptians are fighting, say tank battles are continuing between the two sides.

A military communique from Cairo on Sunday (14th October) said Egyptian forces advanced along the entire Suez Canal front, destroying 24 Israeli aircraft and 150 Israeli tanks. The communique did not stats how far the Egyptians had advanced, but said they had been able to secure further areas of the Sinai desert.

The Israelis said on Sunday that an Egyptian offensive along the entire length of the Canal front had failed and ???00 Egyptian tanks had been knocked out. It said the Egyptian troops did not succeed in penetrating the now-reinforced Israeli lines and returned to their bridge-heads.

On Saturday (13th October), the authoritative military commentator, General Haim Herzog claimed that extensive Egyptian Commando operations had been going on in Sinai during the week. 45 of the Commandos had been killed, he said and 155 were taken prisoner. General Herzog - the former head of Israeli Intelligence - has become the main Israeli source of semi-official reports on the progress of military operations.

On Sunday, an Israel army spokesman announced that Israel had taken a total of 414 Arab prisoners, including 58 officers, on both war fronts.

Sway from the fighting, civilians in Tel Aviv are doing what they can to support Israel's military efforts. Mobile clinics are touring the city streets collecting blood from volunteer donors. Just outside the city the unlimited supply of sand is also being put to use by Israelis too young to be called into more active service in filling sandbags.
