Tens of thousands of fans were there to pay their last respects to their idol who was the embodiment of their dreams and aspirations. The son of a poor cotton farmer, Elvis Presley had made it to the top becoming a millionaire many times over on the way up. The BBC's Michael cole described the scene at Presley's home - Graceland Mansion - and later at the mausoleum in Memphi where he was to be interred.
SYNOPSIS: There was hysteria in the crowd caused by the crush and by disappointment. At 6.30 police began closing the gates of the mansion explaining that the Presley family wanted to regain their privacy. The viewing of the body was ever. The decision provoked a bitter reaction from those who'd waited in vain. This morning the mausoleum where Presley will lie was literally surrounded by flowers. More than 16 hundred wreaths were sent from all over the world...many from fan clubs in England."
The funeral cortege taking Presley's body to the mausoleum near where his mother is buried comprised a hearse and 16 white limousines in a cavalcade of yet another 100 cars carrying official mourners. It took an hour to get to the cemetery.
