    SEVERAL HUNDREDS DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED IN A PARK IN YOKOSUKA, JAPAN, ON THURSDAY TO PROTECT AGAINST THE ARRIVAL OF THE UNITED STATES NUCLEAR SUBMARINE, SCULPIN. THEY STAGED THEIR DEMONSTRATION AREA NEAR THE UNITED STATES NAVAL BASE IN YOKOSUKA, JUST SOUTH OF TOKYO.

    THE SCULPIN IS THE THIRD AMERICAN NUCLEAR POWERED SUBMARINE TO VISIT THE YOKOSUKA PORT. IT ARRIVED FOR MAINTENANCE AT THE AMERICAN BASE AND TO ENABLE THE CREW TO HAVE REST AND RECREATION. THE 3,000-TON SUBMARINE WILL BE IN YOKOSUKA FOR 12 DAYS.

    DEMONSTRATIONS CREATED THE SUBMARINE'S ARRIVAL. STUDENTS GATHERED AT THE RINKAI PARK AND THEIR SCUFFLES WITH POLICE, DURING A PROCESSION OUT OF THE PARK. EIGHT STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH VIOLATING PUBLIC SAFETY AND TRAFFIC LAWS.
