  • Description

Earlier this month Ghana's Commissioner for Health, Major Anthony Selormey, launched a city-wide attack on the swarms of mosquitoes that are threatening Accra with an increase in the incidence of Malaria and other diseases.

The attack is being mounted by three teams of experts -- and units of all three are seen in action on Monday (18 February). The first is a health education unit whose job is to educate the public in mosquito control methods. The second team is engaged on spraying Accra's drains and streams with insecticide to kill the mosquitoes before they hatch out. The third team has the unpleasant job of weeding the city's overgrown drains to let the water flow more freely and thus prevent the mosquitoes from breading.

The campaign, which is due to finish on the 5th of March, is being mounted with the assistance of the Accra City Council's Cleansing Department and the Field Hygiene Unit of the Ghanaian Army. The equipment needed has been provided by the Army and the Health Ministry.
