  • Description

A major transfer of land and power to the people of the third World, is the only way to wipe out poverty. The Speaker was Tanzanian President, Julius Nyerere addressing the one hundred and fifty nation conference on Agrarian reform and rural development in rome on friday (13 July)
SYNOPSIS: The United Nations body, The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is sponsoring the conference being held at its Rome headquarters.

It has attracted people like the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Andrew Young. Its purpose it to develop programmes to overcome poverty and lack of development in countries mostly dependant on agriculture. Its a subject which President Nyerere of Tanzania has strong opinions on. FAO estimates that the number of rural poor in the developing nations now exceed 1,300 million and nearly 500 million are suffering from hunger or malnutrition. Its predicted that the total rural populations of those countries will rise by at least another 800 million during the last quarter of the century.

President Nyerere warned that the Rome conference must face up to political issue of land reform if it is to be successful. He said that it takes a strong political will to achieve reform and that it is never painless. Tanzania has in recent years followed a 'villagisation' policy of establishing self supporting rural communities.

The conference opened with charges from the international aid organisation, Oxfam that it was a 'counter conference' ... a cover-up to protect vested interests. Oxfam urged the delegates, 'not to add yet another pile of paper resolutions to those that politicians in rich countries can use to stall with.
