  • Description

Egypt's President Sadat arrived at Riyadh in Saudi Arabia on Saturday (21 February) for talks with King Khaled believed to be aimed at obtaining credit to reduce Egypt's big balance of payments deficit.

On Sunday (22 February) in the first formal talks of President Sadat's six day visit, the Middle East News Agency reported that the two leaders discussed Middle East development and bilateral relations.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt became much closer after Mr. Sadat became President five years ago but King Khaled's government has shown little enthusiasm toward Egyptian policies since Egypt's interim peace agreement with Israel last September.

The Saudis are believed to be worried that some clauses in the agreement may tie Egypt's hands in any future Arab-Israeli confrontation. This is believed to have contributed to the lukewarm response so far to Mr. Sadat's call to Arab countries for an urgent "transfusion" of some 2,000 million pounds (about 4,000 million US dollars) aid for Egypt's economy.

President Sadat has often asserted that the interim peace agreement will not keep Egypt from the forefront of the struggle to liberate all occupied Arab territories. If Saudi Arabia is convinced by President Sadat's assertions then the way could be open of a more generous flow of oil funds into Egypt, observers have said.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal has been reported as saying there was compete agreement on all topics discussed by the King and the Egyptian President on Sunday. He added that the talks were aimed at closing Arab ranks in order to face the challenges imposed on the Arab nation.
