  • Description

Riot police were out in force in The Hague on Saturday (24 April) as thousands of refugees from South Molucca held a meeting in the Dutch capital.

Security forces places a strong guard around the Indonesian Embassy in case there was trouble as the meeting got underway in a nearby hall.

Previously the event -- an annual affair -- has passed without incidents and been little noticed by the authorities.

However, earlier this month seven South Moluccans were jailed for six years for storming the Indonesian Consulate in Amsterdam last December and holding 43 people hostage to draw world attention to their claims for the independence of the South Moluccas, a cluster of islands incorporated by Indonesia when it became independent from Holland in 1949.

The Moluccans have complained about delays in setting up a planned joint Moluccan-Dutch commission to examine the problems of the Moluccan community in Holland.

According to Reuters, Moluccan community leaders in Holland say their people have been betrayed by Holland which allowed Indonesia -- formerly the Dutch East Indies -- to take over the Moluccan islands.

Saturday's meeting was orderly and was addressed by the South Moluccans' self-styled President Manosama.
