  • Description

The United States Army has loaned a heavy-duty helicopter to the Dutch Government for work on the final stages of a 25-year dyke rebuilding programme. The machine, a Sikorsky "Skycrane", is principally involved in carrying heavy blocks of concrete to fill the last major gap in the dyke system -- designed to prevent another tragedy like the 1953 flood in which nearly two thousand people died. VISNEWS cameraman Jac de Gier filmed it at work.

SYNOPSIS: Holland -- and the final stages of a 25-year dyke rebuilding programme, designed to prevent another tragedy like the 1953 flood in which nearly two thousand people died. Raging seas also reclaimed land which had been won from it over a five-hundred-year period. Now, in the last years of the plan, the U.S. Army has loaned a heavy-duty helicopter to plug the final gaps in two-hundred-and-fifty-million-pounds-worth of wall....enclosing part of Holland in a giant barrier against the savagery of the North Sea.

The helicopter, a Sikorsky "Skycrane", is helping to bring forward the date of the project's completion. Now, with its aid, the contractors believe that operation "Delta Plan" will end in the next few years--and Holland will be safe from the seas once again.
