  • Description

TRANSCRIPT: REPORTER: "WHY DID THE PEACE TALKS BREAK DOWN?"

BRIGADIER: "IT WAS DUE TO THE ATTITUDE TAKEN UP BY THE REBELS."

REPORTER: "HOW BADLY DO THE FEDERAL SIDE WANT PEACE?"

BRIGADIER: "JUST AS BADLY AS THEY WANT IT."

REPORTER: "WHAT DO YOU THINK THE OUTCOME IS FOR THE FUTURE?"

BRIGADIER: "ON OUR SIDE THE REST OF THE DELEGATES ARE STILL IN KAMPALA AND ARE PREPARED TO STOP THERE UNTIL ANY DAY THAT THEY ARE READY."

REPORTER: "IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY WHILE YOU ARE IN LONDON AND THEY ARE IN LONDON THAT THE PEACE TALKS MIGHT START AGAIN IN LONDON?"

BRIGADIER: "WELL, I DON'T KNOW. IT CANNOT BE RULED OUT. BUT AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW, THE SECRETARY-GENERAL IS IN KAMPALA HIMSELF AT THE MOMENT. HE IS NOT BACK."

REPORTER: "THERE HAVE BEEN CLAIMS BY THE BIAFRANS OF ATROCITIES BEING CARRIED OUT BY YOUR SIDE. WHAT'S YOUR ANSWER TO THESE ALLEGATIONS?"

BRIGADIER: "MY ANSWER TO THAT IS THAT THIS IS SOME OF THEIR PROPAGANDA WHICH THEY ARE CARRYING OUT ALL THE TIME AND MAKING ALL SORTS OF FALSE ... I AM SORRY TO SAY SOME JOURNALISTS ALSO ARE ASSISTING THEM IN THIS, AND I SHALL COME UP AT THE RIGHT TIME WITH DOCUMENTS WHICH WE HAVE CAPTURED TO PROVE MY STATEMENT.

REPORTER: "BUT, ARE YOU USING MERCENARY SOLDIERS?"

BRIGADIER: "NOT AT ALL. WE HAVE NOT GOT ONE SINGLE MERCENARY SOLDIER IN THE NIGERIAN ARMY."

REPORTER: "WHAT DO YOU SEE NOW AS THE FUTURE?"

BRIGADIER: "IT'S LEFT TO THE REBELS, IF THEY ARE PREPARED TO TALK AFTER ALL THEY BROKE OFF THE TALKS, WE DIDN'T. IF WE HAD BROKEN OFF THE TALKS THEN PEOPLE WOULD HAVE ACCUSED US OF NOT WANTING PEACE. WE WANT PEACE JUST AS THEY WANT PEACE. WE MUSN'T FORGET THIS POINT. WE STARTED THIS FIGHTING BECAUSE OF SECESSION. AND NOT UNLESS WE CAN SAY THAT SECESSION IS COMPLETELY RENOUNCED, NO, WE CANNOT CEASEFIRE. WE EVEN WENT TO THE EXTENT THAT WAS WHY WE HAD THESE PRIVATE TALKS TO MAKE IT PALATABLE FOR THEM NOT TO SPELL IT OUT TO MAKE ANY PRONOUNCED STATEMENT OR PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT. THAT THEY HAVE RENOUNCED SECESSION. WE WERE PREPARED TO USE GROUNDS AND TERMS WHICH WOULD EVENTUALLY MEAN COMING BACK INTO THE FOLD. ALL WE WANT IS TO KEEP NIGERIA ONE."

THE CHIEF NEGOTIATOR FOR BIAFRA, SIR LOUIS MBANEFO, LEFT KAMPALA ON FRIDAY. HE SAID HE WOULD RESUME THE TALKS IF THE NIGERIANS SHOWED WHAT HE TERMED "A SERIOUS DESIRE FOR SETTLEMENT." BUT HE WOULD NOT TALK "WITH BAYONETS AT OUR BACK."
THE NIGERIAN CHIEF NEGOTIATOR, CHIEF ENAHORO LEFT UGANDA FOR LAGOS ON SUNDAY (JUNE 2).

A MEMBER OF HIS NEGOTIATING TEAM, BRIGADIER OGUNDIPE, HAS FLOWN TO LONDON. HE WAS INTERVIEWED AT LONDON AIRPORT.
