  • Description

SOUTH AFRICA'S OPEN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN JOHANNESBURG HAVE BEGUN UNDER A CLOUD WITH THE DECISION OF THE DAVIS CUP NATIONS TO BAN SOUTH AFRICA FROM THE COMPETITION THIS YEAR.

THE DECISION IS A BLOW TO SOUTH AFRICAN SPORT WHICH WAS NOT ENTIRELY UNEXPECTED....NEVERTHELESS THERE WERE STILL 54 OVERSEAS ENTRIES IN THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS.

THE DAVIS CUP BAN HAS FORCED SOUTH AFRICA ONE STEP NEARER TO TOTAL ISOLATION IN WORLD SPORT.

THERE HAVE BEEN PREDICTIONS THAT INDIVIDUAL SOUTH AFRICAN TENNIS PLAYERS MAY BE BANNED FROM PLAYING IN TOURNAMENTS IN OTHER COUNTRIES-BUT SO FAR THERE HAVE BEEN NO MOVES AGAINST THEM. HOWEVER, SOUTH AFRICAN PLAYER BOB HEWITT, SAYS HE CAN SEE NO REASON WHY INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS WON'T BE BANNED FROM TOURNAMENTS NOW THAT THE COUNTRY IS OUT OF THE DAVIS CUP.

AUSTRALIANS ARE SEEDED TOP IN THE JOHANNESBURG TOURNAMENT WITH ROD LAVER AT THE HEAD OF THE MEN'S LIST AND MRS. MARGARET COURT THE FIRST-SEEDED WOMAN PLAYER.
