  • Description

Visnews filmed the Abernethy Forest, Inverness-shire, June 22 as more than 200 firemen, workers, villagers and paratroopers stationed nearby fought a blaze raging in the Seafield estate tree plantations.

Drought-scorched heather, gorse and trees were easy prey to the roaring flames which at times died down to patches of embers, only to be fanned up a moment later by frank winds desperately short following a heat wave which had reduced all brooks in the neighbourhood to shallow sluggish trickles.

For a time the blase threatened nearby villages. Temporary evacuation was necessary at Nethy Bridge where wooden sheds on the outskirts were doused with water. The smouldering fire crept within 300 yards of the houses when the wind abated.

The head forester of the estate near Nethy Bridge estimated that the fire had destroyed about 80 acres of forestry plantations. The dryness of the undergrowth made it extremely difficult to extinguish the fire completely. Mr. Macdonald said: "If this weather goes on it may be several weeks before it is finally under control.
