  • Description

The Kenyan Government is making good use of the many rivers within the country's borders.

Last year, it set up the Tana River Development Authority to carry out studies aimed at developing the Tana River Basin as a whole, with emphasis laid on agriculture, tourism, irrigation and existing hydro-electric power development.

The 500-mile (800-km) long Tana Rive,r Kenya's biggest, drains a watershed area of nearly 24 million acres and the controlled flow of its waters throughout the year will be guaranteed by the power-stations already operating at Kindaruma and Kamburn and a big new power-station to be built slightly upstream from Kamburn.

Associated irrigation projects mean a new way of life for settlers along the river. At one of the new settlements, Hola, local settlers are already producing good crops fo cotton and maize. Once they had to live on a meagre diet of rice, fish and game whenever available. The upland cotton grown in Hola is among the world's best and accounts for over one sixth of Kenya's total cotton corp.

The success of the Hola scheme means not just a new and better life for the settlers, but more important still, it provides fresh hope for the manum landless who have converged on Nairobi and will help to relieve the pressure on the heavily populated Central Province. There's already a waiting list of ten many families for the Bura project further upstream. Bura has over thirty thousand acres of land available....land enough for 100,000 people.
