Background: President Idi Amin of Uganda told a news conference in Damascus on Tuesday (16th October) that he had volunteered, personally, to join the fight against Israel. He said many Ugandans wanted to fight and his troops would soon be taking part in the action on both fronts.

General Amin was visiting Syria as part of a tour of Arab countries to confer with their leaders on the war situation. He had earlier visited Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Jordan. He said he wanted to brief the people of Africa on the Middle East war.

His stay in Damascus coincided with heavy air activity around the city. General Amin was taken to visit captured Israeli pilots in hospital.

SYNOPSIS: The sound of air activity over Damascus on Tuesday welcomed President Idi Amin of Uganda to the city. The actual front was about twenty miles distant form the Syrian capital, but many civilians had armed themselves against the possibility that it may draw nearer. Rifles were being carried in the streets and many of the private vehicles had been camouflaged against air attacks.

As soon as the war broke out, General Amin pledged that his forces would john in on the Arab side. He arrived in Syria after talks in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Jordan, and repeated his promise to a news conference.
