    LAST NIGHT THOUSANDS OF WEST BERLINERS ATTENDED A MIDNIGHT TORCH DEMONSTRATION. THE SQUARE IN FRONT OF THE CITY HALL, WHERE THERE WAS A SECOND HUGE TORCHLIGHT RALLY TONIGHT, IT TO BE RENAMED "JOHN F. KENNEDY SQUARE." ALL OVER THE CITY - AT THE BRANDENBURG GATE, CHECKPOINT CHARLIE, AND ALL PUBLIC BUILDINGS - FLAGS WERE FLOWN AT HALF-MAST.

    IN PARIS THE CITY JOINED PRESIDENT DE GAULLE IN HONOURING THE MEMORY OF THE AMERICAN LEADER HE DESCRIBED AS "THIS GRAND EXAMPLE AND THIS GRAND MAN." AT SHAPE (SUPREME HEADQUARTERS OF THE ALLIED POWERS IN EUROPE) THE FLAGS OF THE FIFTEEN COUNTRIES OF THE ATLANTIC ALLIANCE WERE LOWERED TO HALF-MAST. FLAGS WERE ALSO LOWERED OVER THE ELYSEE PALACE AND TA ALL EMBASSIES.

    CROWDS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN ROME AS SOON AS THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE PRESIDENT'S TRAGIC DEATH WAS MADE. AN EARLY VISITORS TO THE EMBASSY WAS PRESIDENT SEGNI WHO SAID: "THE EXECRABLE ATTACK WHICH HAS CUT DOWN PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S YOUNG LIFE IS A CRIME AGAINST ALL MANKIND." AS A SIGN OF THE NATIONS'S SORROW, ALL FLAGS ARE TO BE HUNG AT HALF-MAST FOR THREE DAYS, AND NEGOTIATIONS FOR A NEW GOVERNMENT ARE TO BE SUSPENDED.

    IT IS LONDON THAT THE SYMPATHY OF A WHOLE NATION IS PERHAPS MOST CLEARLY SHOWN, AT THE U.S. EMBASSY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE TO THE KENNEDY FAMILY. THEY HAVE BEEN JOINED BY MANY DIPLOMATIC INCLUDING RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR SOLDATOV.

    ELSEWHERE IN BRITAIN PEOPLE HAVE PAID TRIBUTE IN THE WAYS. AT FOOTBALL MATCHES TODAY CROWDS STOOD FOR A MINUTE SILENCE, SHOWING THE COUNTRY'S SENSE OF LOSS AND ITS SYMPATHY WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

    EARLIER THIS YEAR, PRESIDENT KENNEDY VISITED IRELAND, THE ANCESTRAL HOME OF THE KENNEDY FAMILY. HERE, THE COUNTRY FEELS A SENSE OF DEEP PERSONAL LOSS. PEOPLE WEPT OPENLY WHEN THE NEWS WAS ANNOUNCED. IN NEW ROSS. COUNTRY WEXFORD, WHERE THE FAMILY HOMESTEAD IS SITUATED, THE HOUSE WHERE THE PRESIDENT HAD TEA WITH HIS IRISH RELATIONS LAST JUNE, IS SHUTTERED, AND THE CURTAINS DRAWN.
