  • Description

The Australian airline QUANTAS today (Wednesday) paid a half-million dollar (GBP237,000 sterling) ransom demanded by a man who said a bomb had been planted on an airliner carrying 116 passengers.

Our telerecording of coverage by the Australian Broadcasting Commission takes up the final stages of the drama at Sydney airport, where a full security operation swung into action as the threatened Boeing 707 landed. The aircraft touched down safely and once he had been paid the ransom the man who made the threat said there had never been a bomb aboard the airliner.

SYNOPSIS: A major aviation drama unfolds at Sydney airport early on Wednesday morning. The Australian airline QUANTAS, had just received a threat that a bomb was aboard a Boeing 707 jetliner with a hundred and sixteen passengers aboard. A man calling himself "Mr. Brown" demanded a cash ransom of a half-million Australian dollars from the airline -- that's over a quarter of million pounds sterling.

The threatened boeing returned to Sydney after circling over Botany Bay to burn up fuel. Seven ships including two destroyers, patrolled beneath the jet. At the airport, a full emergency operation swung into operation.

Just before the airliner came in to land, QUANTAS officials wound up telephone negotiations with the mysterious "Mr. Brown" by handing over the demanded half-million dollar ransom. They were then told that the bomb threat had been an elaborate hoax. But as the blackmailer had earlier told officials of another bomb hidden in an airport locker -- where explosives were found -- the full emergency continued as the threatened Boeing touched down. The passengers had themselves searched the jet for any sign of a bomb on board. But they found nothing. The airliner made a perfect touchdown, and for the hundred and sixteen passengers and twelve crew members, the drama was over. At the same time, police started a massive hunt for the so-called "Mr. Brown" and his half-million dollar ransom.
