UNEXPLODED ISRAELI SHELLS LAY IN THE FLOODED, RUBBLE-FILLED STREETS OF SUEZ AFTER AN ARTILLERY DUEL LAST SUNDAY (8 SEPTEMBER) BETWEEN EGYPTIAN AND ISRAELI FORCES WHICH BATTERED HOUSES AND CAUSED A NUMBER OF CASUALTIES. THE EXCHANGE,ONE OF THE MOST INTENSE SINCE THE 1967 SIX-DAY WAR, TOOK PLACE ALONG THE CEASE-FIRE LINE ACROSS THE SUEZ CANAL.

AN EGYPTIAN ARMY SPOKESMAN ANNOUNCED LAST SUNDAY, AFTER A CEASE-FIRE ARRANGED BY UNITED NATIONS OBSERVERS, THAT HOUSES AND HARBOUR INSTALLATIONS HAD SUFFERED CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE AT SUEZ AND PORT TEWFIK IN THE THREE-AND-A-HALF HOUR BATTLE.

ISMAILIA, ONE OF THE CITIES AFFECTED BY THE ARTILLERY DUEL, NORMALLY HAD A POPULATION OF 130,000, MOST OF WHOM WERE EVACUATED AFTER LAST YEAR'S WAR.

CASUALTY FIGURES ISSUED IN SUEZ SAID THAT 17 PEOPLE DIED AND 93 WERE INJURED IN THE CITIES OF SUEZ, ISMAILIA AND KANTARA IN SUEZ. OVER 100 FAMILIES WERE REPORTED TO BE HOMELESS.

SURGEONS OPERATED THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT AS CIVIL DEFENCE WORKERS PICKED THEIR WAY THROUGH THE BLACKED OUT STREETS SEARCHING FOR VICTIMS IN THE RUBBLE OF SMASHED BUILDINGS.

THE STREETS WERE FLOODED WITH WATER FROM BURST MAINS, AND DESKS AND FILES WERE SCATTERED OVER THE DEBRIS NEAR THE SHELL-SHATTERED GOVERNORATE BUILDING IN SUEZ. TWO MEN, INCLUDING A POLICE OFFICER, WERE KILLED AND FIVE WOUNDED WHEN A SHELL TORE INTO THE BUILDING.

SUEZ, NORMALLY A CITY OF 260,000 PEOPLE, HAS ALREADY BEEN EVACUATED EXCEPT FOR ABOUT 60,000 ESSENTIAL WORKERS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

THE GOVERNOR OF SUEZ, HAMED MAHMOUD, VISITED CASUALTIES IN HOSPITAL AND SPOKE WITH SOME OF THEM.
