  • Description

Arab leaders, including those of Egypt, Syria, Libya and Jordan, gathered in Cairo today for a top-level conference aimed at ending the bitter conflict between Jordan's King Hussein and the Palestinian commandoes. Neither King Hussein, nor the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat were at the conference, however, although the king was represented by Brigadier Da'Oud, Prime Minister of Jordan's military government. But later tonight, a four-man delegation, including the Sudanese leader General El Nimeiry, flew to Jordan to try to intervene in the conflict,
The leaders of Tunis, Lebanon, Kuwait and Sudan were also at the meetings, which are now adjourned to await the outcome of the four-man mission to Amman. Among the leaders who flew into Cairo today, to be greeted by Egypt's Vice-President Anwar El Sadat, were Colonel Gaddafi of Libya, President At Attassi of Syria and the Prime Minister of Tunis, El Bahy El-Adham. Meanwhile, the fighting in Jordan continues amid confused reports of battles between jordan army units and commandoes assisted by forces from Syria. In Amman, Red Cross workers who flew out today with the first of the casualties, reported the situation in the city was chaotic, with casualties running into tens of thousands.
