  • Description

Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin met with a delegation of Israeli-Arabs on Monday (24 May) for general discussion on the Arab minority in the country.

Israeli officials said the meeting was requested by the Arabs some time ago.

The issue of the Government's requisitioning of land in the Galilee area was raised by the Arab delegates, but Mr. Rabin said he could not agree with their requests to reverse the policy.

Arab leaders also asked for an inquiry into the fighting which has resulted in six deaths since the end of March on the occupied West Bank.

The two groups met for two hours and afterwards Mr. Rabin announced the formation of a Jewish and Arab Council which would aim at improving relations between the two communities.

He said the Council would try to ensure equality between Arab and Jew, while also paying respect to the two groups' cultural and religious differences.

According to news reports, lack of opportunities have been one of the Arabs' chief grievances. They complain they are being treated as second class citizens, with inferior housing and social services.

Just over 400 thousand Arabs live in Israel, with another 600 thousand Arabs in the West Bank area.
