  • Description

Czechoslovakia and Portugal fought to a one-all draw in a European Nations Cup soccer match in Oporto, Portugal, on Wednesday (12 November).

All the scoring came early in the match, with Ondrus putting Czechoslovakia ahead in the seventh minute, and Nene tying the score with a goal for Portugal a minute later.

In the thirteenth minute of play, the Portuguese team had the chance of another goal, with a free kick, but Nene's attempt went high.

Their superior technique and drive meant that Portugal dominated the match in the first half ... with the ball rarely leaving the Czechoslovakian half. Play was more even in the second 45 minutes. Portugal kept up the attack and with all the players in the Czech half, the Czechs launched some dangerous counter-moves which almost brought them victory.

The game's result leaves the European Nations Group One competition tantalisingly balanced between England and Czechoslovakia. Both teams have seven points, with one game each to play. But Czechoslovakia meet Cyprus which has yet to win a game this season, and England meets Portugal.

Even if England and Czechoslovakia both win their games, the Czechs could win on a goal count.
