  • Description

"FLYING SCOTSMAN" - ONE OF BRITISH RAILWAY'S MOST FAMOUS LOCOMOTIVES - HAS RETIRED FROM ACTIVE SERVICE. THE ENGINE LEFT KING'S CROSS STATION IN LONDON TODAY (MONDAY) FOR THE LAST TIME. ITS DESTINATION - DONCASTER, IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND, WHERE IT WS BUILT IN 1923.

THE ENGINE, WHICH HAS BECOME REDUNDANT, WAS THE FIRST TO RECORD OFFICIALLY A SPEED OF 100 MILES AN HOUR. "FLYING SCOTSMAN", AT JOURNEY'S END, HAD TRAVELLED A TOTAL OF 2,076.000 MILES - AND STILL HELD THE RECORD FOR THE LONDON-LEADS RUN WITH A TIME OF 2 HOURS 31 MINUTES.

IT HAS BEEN BOUGHT BY A BUSINESSMAN, MR ALAN PEGLER, WHO WILL "STABLE" IT PRIVATELY AT THE WORKS WHERE IT WAS CONSTRUCTED. THE ENGINE COST JUST UNDER 8,000 TO MAKE; AND MR PEGLER HAS PAID 3,000 FOR IT. HE INTENDS TO PRESERVE IT IN WORKING ORDER.

HE SAYS IT'S A MONUMENT TO HE SKILL OF LOCAL CRAFTSMAN. HE HOPES TO HIRE IT OUT OCCASIONALLY FOR EXHIBITIONS TO PULL SPECIAL TRAINS. THIS WOULD HELP TO DEFRAY PRESERVATION COSTS. TODAY, HE TRAVELLED ON ITS LAST TRIP NORTHWARDS ON THE FOOTPLATE.
