  • Description

INDONESIAN TROOPS GUARDED THE SOVIET INFORMATION SERVICE BUILDING IN DJAKARTA ON TUESDAY AFTER MEMBERS OF THE POWERFUL STUDENTS' ORGANISATION, KAMI, HAD DEMANDED THE CLOSING OF AN EXHIBITION ON THE LIFE OF LENIN BEING HELD WITHIN.

ON MONDAY MORNING, KAMI GAVE THE RUSSIANS 24 HOURS TO CLOSE DOWN THE EXHIBITION, SAYING IT WAS NOT THE RIGHT TIME FOR SUCH A GESTURE. THE RUSSIANS REFUSED.

AS THE STUDENTS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE BUILDING NEXT DAY, THEY FOUND INDONESIAN TROOPS STANDING ON GUARD. THE TROOPS SAID THEY HAD BEEN ORDERED TO TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION TO PREVENT DAMAGE, AND THE STUDENTS DISPERSED.

LATER, OFFICIALS OF THE SOVIET EMBASSY AND THE INDONESIAN FOREIGN OFFICE CONFERRED AND ANNOUNCED THAT THE EXHIBITION WAS BEING TEMPORARILY CLOSED.
