    ONE WEEK BEFORE THE OPENING ON MARCH 15TH OF EXPO '70 IN JAPAN, THE ORGANISERS HELD A DRESS REHEARSAL OF THE OPENING CEREMONY AT THE EXPOSITION SITE OUTSIDE OSAKA.

    THE DRESS REHEARSAL INVOLVED HUNDREDS OF HOSTESSES, GUIDES, FLAG BEARERS, HONOUR GUARD, MASSED BANDS AND OFFICIALS, WHO WILL TAKE PART IN THE OPENING CEREMONY.

    AFTER THE FLAGS OF EXPO '70 AND JAPAN WERE RAISED IN THE EXPOSITION PLAZA, THE PLAYING OF A FANFARE SIGNALLED A 21-GUN SALUTE. THE FLAGS OF THE PARTICIPATING NATIONS WERE ALSO CARRIED INTO THE PLAZA.

    SEVENTY SEVEN NATIONS ARE TAKING PART IN EXPO '70 -- ASIA'S FIRST-EVER WORLD EXPOSITION. THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT HAS PUT YEARS OF PLANNING INTO THE WORLD FAIR. THE GOVERNMENT HAS ALSO SPENT 34,700 MILLION YEN (ABOUT 40 MILLION STERLING), WHILE EXPO SALESMEN HAVE TOURED THE WORLD TO PROMOTE THE FAIR.

    40 MILLION VISITORS FROM JAPAN OVERSEAS ARE EXPECTED TO VIEW THE INTERNATIONAL DISPLAYS. EXPO '70 IS SCHEDULED TO LAST FOR 183 DAYS. THE THEME OF THE EXPOSITION IS "PROGRESS AND HARMONY FOR MANKIND".
