The Soviet Foreign minister, Mr. Andrei Gromyko, arrived in Damascus, Syria, on Monday (27 May), just as Dr. Henry Kissinger was concluding his twelfth session of talks in a month with Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad. The United States Secretary of State flew back to Israel about an hour after Mr. Gromyko's plane had landed at Damascus Airport. The two men did not meet.
During the following day (Tuesday) Mr. Gromyko and President Assad were to discuss the latest efforts of Dr. Kissinger to reach an agreement between Syria and Israel for a disengagement of their troops along the Golan Heights. Earlier, Mr. Gromyko had had a long meeting with the Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister, Mr. Abdel-Halim Khaddam.
The Soviet Union and the United States are co-sponsors of the Middle East peace talks in Geneva, which are being help up until an agreement on disengagement along the Syrian-Israeli front can be reached.
