Baluba tribal chiefs, led by Albert Kalondji, met in Leopoldville, Congo Republic, Nov 12. Kalondji is President of the breakaway diamond State of South Kasai - where United Nations troops have been putting down disorders - and chief of the Baluba tribe.
Kalondji is a supporter of the Congo's President Kasavuba ... and an enemy of the deposed Premier Lumumba. He attacked the "passivity" of the U.N. troops who, he said, were watching without intervention the slaughter of children and women, and rape and stealing by the Lulua tribesmen and soldiers of Lumumba.
He said: "The United Nations protects all Lumumbist leaders, using alien soldiers on our soil, We consider U.N. officials as tourists - and tourists have not to mix in our internal affairs. From now on I can trust only Colonel Mobutu and his Army: he is the only one who is able to restore order. Afterwards, we shall create prosperity by our own work with our faces seating."
Hostile Baluba tribesmen were said to have been involved in the attack on Irish troops of the United Nations Nov 8. Following an ambush - 70 miles west of Albertville in Katanga - eight soldiers were killed in an 11-man patrol.
