  • Description

Bitter disputes broke out at a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly's Fifth Committee on Monday (Nov. 19) over who should pay for the U.N. Emergency Peace-keeping force in the Middle East. The Emergency Force is expected to cost about GBP 12 million pounds sterling (30 million U.S. dollars) ir???ts first six months. The debate developed into a wrangle between the Soviet Union and the Arab countries on the one side and Israel on the other.

The Soviet delegate supported the Egyptian position that no Arab country should contribute because they had already paid the price in Arab blood and it was Israel who was the aggressor who should pay.

The Israeli delegate Mr. Hadran immediately denied that Israel was the aggressor. But he was interrupted during his speech by Arab speakers and the chairman -- and the session was abruptly adjourned.
