BATON-SWINGING POLICE DROVE BACK ABOUT 500 DEMONSTRATORS WHO MARCHED ON THE NATO HEADQUARTERS IN THE FIRST SUCH PROTEST OUTSIDE THE 15-NATION ALLIANCE'S COMPOUND ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CAPITAL.

    EARLIER, ABOUT 10,000 PEOPLE ACCORDING TO A POLICE ESTIMATE -- AND 20,000 ACCORDING TO THE ORGANISERS -- MARCHED THROUGH THE CENTRE OF BRUSSELS ON THE JOINT PROTEST. DOORS AND WINDOWS AT THE STOCK EXCHANGE WERE SMASHED.

    OUTSIDE THE NATO HEADQUARTERS, POLICE THREW BARBED WIRE BARRIERS ACROSS THE ROAD AND LOBBED TEAR GAS BOMBS AT THE DEMONSTRATORS BEFORE DISPERSING THEM IN A FIFTEEN-MINUTE CLASH.

    MOST OF THE BELGIAN NATIONALS ARRESTED WERE LATER RELEASED, BUT SOME OF THE 18 FOREIGNERS WERE DETAINED FOR POSSIBLE EXPULSION.
