    FORTY-SEVEN PEOPLE WERE INJURED AND TWO KILLED ON FRIDAY WHEN A TRAIN STRUCK A STALLED LORRY ON A CROSSING AT SAPPORO CITY, JAPAN. BOTH THE DEAD WERE PASSENGERS ABOARD THE TRAIN.

    CARRYING ABOUT A HUNDRED PASSENGERS, THE FIRST COACH OF THE RUSH-HOUR TRAIN OVERTURNED INTO A RICE PADDY. MINUTES AFTER THE CRASH ANOTHER TRAIN COMING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION STRUCK THE DEBRIS OF THE LORRY AND WAS DERAILED. POLICE WERE QUICKLY RUSHED TO THE SCENE AND NURSES AND DOCTORS AIDED THEM IN TENDING THE INJURED. MANY WERE ABLE TO WALK AWAY FROM THE WRECKAGE -- OTHERS HAD TO BE CARRIED AWAY ON STRETCHERS. FOUR PASSENGERS WERE SAID TO BE SERIOUSLY INJURED.

    THE CRASH CAUSED CONFUSION IN TRAIN SERVICES OUT OF SAPPORO. IT OCCURRED AT THE HEIGHT ON THE RUSH HOUR AND THE LINE COULD NOT BE RE-OPENED FOR FIVE-AND-A-HALF HOURS.
