Background: THE MALAYSIAN DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, TUN ABDUL RAZAL, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) OPENED THE SOUTH-EAST ASIAN COMMONWEALTH TELEPHONE CABLE LINK (SEACOM) IN KUALA LUMPUR. AMONG THE FIVE HUNDRED GUESTS PRESENT WERE REPRESENTATIVES FROM BRITAIN AND NEW ZEALAND.

THE CABLE LINK IS BETWEEN MALAYA, SINGAPORE AND SABAH. THE SEACOM ALSO LINKS UP WITH FIVE OTHER CENTRES: LONDON, NEW YORK, SYDNEY, TOKYO AND MOSCOW.

ADDRESSING THE GATHERING, TUN RAZAK SAID THAT MALAYSIANS WOULD SHED EVERY DROP OF BLOOD TO DEFEND THE NATION, IF PRESIDENT SUKARNO OF INDONESIA CARRIED OUT FURTHER PROVOCATION. MALAYSIA, HE ADDED, COULD COUNT ON HELP FROM HER PARTNERS IN THE COMMONWEALTH.

PICKING UP A RED TELEPHONE, TUN RAZAK THEN DIALLED JESSELTON, THE CAPITAL OF SABAH, AND SPOKE FOR FIVE MINUTES WITH THE SABAH CHIEF MINISTER, MR. PETER LO. THEIR CONVERSATION WAS HEARD BY THE GUESTS IN THE HALL OVER A PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM. LATER, CABLE EQUIPMENT WERE DISPLAYED TO THE GUESTS.

WITH THE OPENING OF THE LINK, MALAYSIA BECOMES THE FIRST COUNTRY IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA TO ENJOY THE BENEFITS OF SUBMARINE CABLE SYSTEM.
