  • Description

DETECTIVES INVESTIGATING THE WORLD'S BIGGEST ART ROBBERY AT THE DULWICH COLLEGE GALLERY IN SOUTH LONDON HAVE FOUND NO LEAD TO THE WHEREABOUTS OF EIGHT STOLEN PICTURES, VALUED AT GBP 1/2 MILLION STERLING.

ART EXPERTS SAID TODAY THAT THE PAINTINGS STOLEN YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) WOULD HAVE NO VALUE FOR THE THIEVES, SINCE THE PICTURES WERE NOT INSURED AND WERE TOO WELL KNOWN TO BE SOLD.

THE THIEVES CUT THROUGH A DOOR TO ENTER THE GALLERY, WHERE 371 PICTURES, VALUED AT OVER GBP 30 MILLION STERLING ARE EXHIBITED. THEY STOLE THREE PAINTINGS BY RUBENS, THREE BY REMBRANDT, ONE BY GERARD DOU AND ONE BY ADAM ELSHEIMER.

ART EXPERTS BELIEVE THE THIEVES MAY HAVE THOUGHT THE PAINTINGS WERE INSURED, HOPING TO RANSOM THEM. BUT NONE OF THEM INSURED. THE PICTURES ARE ALSO CONSIDERED UNSALEABLE ON THE OPEN MARKET BECAUSE THEY ARE SO WELL KNOWN.

ONE THEORY IS THAT THE THIEVES WERE WORKING FOR A WEALTHY ART FANATIC WHO WANTED THE PAINTINGS FOR A PRIVATE COLLECTION, BUT SO FAR, POLICE HAVE HAD NO OLVES AS TO THE WHEREABOUTS OF THE STOLEN PICTURES.
