    The sixteenth International Moroccan Motor Rally begins on Wednesday (9 May) in Rabat.

    Seventy-two competitors from eleven countries are taking part in the four-day event. They include a large entry from France.

    The rally is run in four stages over a total distance of 2544 miles (4093 kilometres). The first stage, 498 miles (1018 kilometres), is from Fez to Marrakesh; the third, 569 miles (915 kilometres), follows a circular route, returning to Marrakesh and the final stage, 845 miles (1459 kilometres), is from Marrakesh to Casablanca.

    The favourite to win the competition is Shekar Mehta who recently won the East African Safari Rally in a works Datsun.

    The Rally if organised by the Royal Automobile Club of Morocco under the patronage of His Majesty King Hassan II. It's gained the reputation of being the premier rally of the Arab world.

    This year there are six women competitors in the event. The total prize money is GBP13,700 (137,000 Moroccan Dirham).
