  • Description

Northern Ireland's militant Protestant leader, the Reverend Ian Paisley, flew yesterday (Monday) to Geneva in an attempt to protest to the World Council of Churches against Pope Paul's visit to Switzerland - "the centre of the Protestant Reformation", as Mr. Paisley put it. Swiss authorities banned his entry and he and his party were detained overnight at Geneva airport. Before being placed on an aircraft for home this morning, (Tuesday) Mr. Paisley spoke to reporters.

In his statement, Mr. Paisley said he and his associates believed that they were the victims of a Roman Catholic conspiracy designed to stop them from having a legitimate protest.

Mr. Paisley who last month was released from jail after four months' imprisonment for his militant activities in Northern Ireland, had stated that he and his associates intended to demonstrate peacefully against the Pope in Geneva. But the Swiss authorities said that they would not permit him to enter the country.
