    A CAPTURED AMERICAN PILOT WAS WHEELED INTO A NORTH VIETNAMESE HOSPITAL RECENTLY SUFFERING FROM BROKEN BONES.

    THE PILOT, MAJOR J.H. KASLER, WAS CAPTURED WHILE ON A BOMBING MISSION NEAR NORTH VIETNAM'S CAPITAL, HANOI. AS HIS JET BLASTED THE OIL DUMPS NEAR HANOI, HE WAS SHOT DOWN BY ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS.

    AS HIS JET NOSE-DIVED, MAJOR KASLER, PARACHUTED AND LANDED IN THE MIDST OF NORTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS. HIS LEG AND HIP BONES WERE BROKEN AND HE RECEIVED SEVERE CUTS FORM THE FALL.

    IT WAS AUGUST EIGHT WHEN MAJOR KASLER TOOK OFF FROM ONE OF THE AIRFIELDS IN THAILAND ON THE RAIDING MISSION. MAJOR KASLER IS AN ACE AMERICAN PILOT WHO HAS BEEN FLYING FOR NEARLY THIRTY YEARS. HE TOOK PART IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR. AND DURING THE KOREAN WAR SHOT DOWN SIX COMMUNIST MIG MIGS.

    IN THIS HOSPITAL, SOMEWHERE IN NORTH VIETNAM, MAJOR KASLER WAS TREATED BY A LOCAL DOCTOR. HE WAS PUT IN A PLASTER CAST AND IS NOW BEING HELD AS A PRISONER OF WAR.

    NEARLY ONE HUNDRED AMERICAN PILOTS ARE BEING HELD BY THE NORTH VIETNAMESE. ALL OF THEM WERE CAPTURED WHILE CARRYING OUT BOMBING RAIDS OVER NORTH VIETNAM. THE FATE OF THESE PILOTS IS STILL UNCERTAIN.

    HANOI GOVERNMENT SAID RECENTLY THAT THE AMERICANS WOULD STAND TRIAL AS "CRIMINALS". A CALL BY THE UNITED STATES FOR AN EXCHANGE OF PRISONERS (NORTH VIETNAMESE HELD BY THE SAIGON GOVERNMENT) WAS REJECTED BY THE HANOI.
