  • Description

Thousands of persons have been forced to flee their homes in a 300-block area of eastern New Orleans six days after Hurricane Betsy swept through the area in a wild rampage. Authorities are still searching for bodies.

So far in the grim search, 63 bodies have been recovered following the wild winds and high water that engulfed the New Orleans area of Louisiana.

Police and health workers are moving through a muddy, flooded 300-block section to clear out any remaining bodies as well as rats, poisonous snakes and hunger-crazed dogs.

Two big pumps are slowly draining the large area so that the five thousand persons whose homes are there can return to their dwellings.

The Red Cross and other social relief agencies have set up a number of disaster headquarters adjacent to the striken area. One of the major problems is the lack of facilities to help the evacuees and a lack of relief personnel.

The police-health crews continue their grim routine by checking through all stalled automobiles and homes in the region in a search for bodies. After a car or home or other structure is checked, a notation is made on the side of it.

Domestic animals which did not escape the storm and flood create a dangerous problem because they spread disease as can undiscovered bodies. Our film shows the despair in a nearby emergency hospital.
