    IN LONDON TODAY, 400 DEMONSTRATORS LAID A MASS OF SPRING FLOWERS OUTSIDE THE SPANISH EMBASSY AS A LAST ACT OF HOMAGE TO JULIAN GRIMAU -- THE 52-YEAR-OLD SPANISH COMMUNIST LEADER WHO WAS SHOT AT DAWN IN MADRID TODAY. HE HAD BEEN CONDEMNED FOR CRIMES COMMITTED DURING THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR, 25 YEARS AGO, AND ON CHARGES OF MORE RECENT SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES. GENERAL FRANCO, SPANISH HEAD OF STATE, REFUSED TO STOP THE EXECUTION DESPITE WORLD-WIDE PROTESTS AND ELEVENTH-HOUR PLEAS FOR MERCY -- INCLUDING ONE FROM THE SOVIET PREMIER, MR. KHRUSHCHEV.

    THE LONDON DEMONSTRATORS INCLUDED VETERANS OF THE INTERNATIONAL BRIGADE THAT FOUGHT IN THE SPANISH WAR, MEMBERS OF BRITISH TRADE UNIONS, STUDENTS AND WEEPING SPANISH WOMEN. THEY PARADED PAST THE SPANISH EMBASSY BEFORE LAYING THEIR FLOWERS.

    AT DAWN TODAY, GRIMAU WALKED QUIETLY TO HIS DEATH UNDER AN OVERCAST SKY. HE REFUSED TO TAKE HOLY COMMUNION, THOUGH A PRIEST STOOD BY UNTIL THE END IN CASE HE CHANGED HIS MIND. WHEN SENTENCED ON THURSDAY, GRIMAU DECLARED: "I HAVE BEEN A COMMUNIST FOR 25 YEARS AND I WILL DIE A COMMUNIST."
