Background: Serious flooding to homes and farmland, followed gales and heavy rain sweeping New South Wales, Australia, Oct. 23.

At Nowra and Wagga on the south coast, families evacuated their homes in the path of floodwater roaring from the Shoalhaven River -- and many more prepared to leave. In face of the rapidly rising water, the only way to dry land was by boat.

Thousands of acres of farmland in the area were swamped as water surged across fields and farm buildings. Nearby, at Berri, a Navy helicopter searched for the bodies of two men drowned on their farm trying to rescue stranded cattle.

Coastal shipping was thrown into chaos, as mighty breakers battered the ferries and small vessels. Many ships struggled through to port, their decks awash. Sydney pilot vessels fought hard to master the angry sea to reach incoming ships. At times, completely hidden by breakers, they ploughed on bravely to get pilots aboard. In parts, the sea was the roughest for years. There were some, however, who defied the elements for pleasure. At Noilson Park, surf riders were seen skimming the breakers in the harbour itself, as ten-feet high waves swept them in from the sea.
