  • Description

The German carnival season opened in Dusseldorf, Nov. 11. as crowds of more than 10,000 watched carnival club members, arrayed in traditional fancy dress, parade through the streets.

Dusseldorf's "court jester" (the Hoppeditz) aroused great hilarity as he stood in the town square and read poems outlining amusing and serious events that affected the town during the past year.

One of the main West German centres of carnival celebrations, Dusseldorf's closely rivalled by Cologne, Mainz on the River Main, and Munich in Bavaria.
