  • Description

Sheikh Mahomed Amin El-Shangity, Deputy-Premier of Jordan, the American Charge d'Affaires, the Italian Ambassador, and a party of Jordanian Government officials were present Sept 29 when the first stage was completed of the East Ghor Irrigation Project. A 70 kilometre system harnessing the Yarmouk River to provide water for the Government's resettlement scheme in the Jordan Valley.

Running from very near the Syrian border, and parallel with the Israeli border, the project - when completed in 1962 - will provide vital water for small economic family size farm units. Farmers are now being selected, ready to move in when water from the first section begins to flow next spring.

Work began on the first stage in Oct 1959. It consisted of the erection of control gates at the inlet portal, and the excavation of a 1 kilometre long tunnel. Work began Sept 26 on the concrete lining of the 22 kilometre second stage.

Financial and technical assistance is being given by the United States Mission to Jordan. Construction of the control structures and the canal lining for the first 22.8 kilometres is being carried out by Impresse Venete Per Construzioni All'Estero of Milan, Italy.
