    HUNDREDS OF SOUTH VIETNAMESE CIVILIANS ARE HOMELESS FOLLOWING AN ATTACK BY VIET CONG FORCES ON THE SUBURBS OF CHAU DOC CITY. THE INFILTRATORS, ESTIMATED AT ABOUT A COMPANY IN STRENGTH, WERE REPELLED BY REGIONAL TROOPS ARE THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE ARMY.

    THE ATTACK CAME EARLY ON THURSDAY (15 MAY), AND GOVERNMENT TROOPS CLASHED WITH THE VIET CONG IN THE SUBURBS ABOUT 2 1/2 MILES (FOUR KMS) FROM THE CITY CENTRE. A NUMBER OF CIVILIANS WERE KILLED AND WOUNDED IN THE BATTLE AND NEARLY 100 HOUSES WERE BURNT DOWN.

    AS THE GOVERNMENT TROOPS LEFT THE TOWN TO PURSUE THE FLEEING VIET CONG, VICTIMS OF THE FIGHTING SEARCHED THE RUINS OF THEIR HOMES FOR THEIR RELATIVES AND POSSESSIONS.

    AMONG THE CASUALTIES WAS A COW, AND THE VICTIMS LOST MOST TIME IN CUTTING UP THE DEAD ANIMAL FOR A MEAL IN THE OPEN AIR.
